John Chavis Memorial Park Expansion | Raleigh Parks and Recreation

Exciting transformations are underway in Raleigh, particularly with the expansion and enhancement of John Chavis Memorial Park, along with nearby community treasures. As Raleigh Parks and Recreation continues to grow, these developments promise to enrich the community’s connection to culture, history, and recreation. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming changes and how they will reshape the landscape of Southeast Raleigh.

John Chavis Aquatics Center Expansion

The heart of the park’s transformation is the new John Chavis Aquatics Center. With a whopping budget of $53.95 million, this project is set to offer both indoor and outdoor facilities tailored for recreation, competition, and wellness. The center will not only provide a year-round aquatic venue but will also feature reconfigured parking areas and improvements to the Heritage Plaza. These enhancements include additional historic interpretive displays that celebrate the rich history of the area.

The aquatics center will feature both indoor and outdoor facilities, offering year-round recreation, competition, and wellness opportunities. Highlights from the floor plan include:

  • A competition pool
  • A toddler pool with zero-entry access
  • An outdoor recreation pool
  • A lazy river and water slide

Revitalization of John P. Top Greene African American Cultural Center

Alongside the aquatic center, the John P. Top Greene African American Cultural Center is undergoing significant renovations. With a budget of $9.295 million, the project includes the expansion of the existing community center, site stormwater improvements, and a new trailhead to the South Park Heritage Trail. This cultural hub will continue to serve as a beacon for community gatherings and educational opportunities.

Introduction of South Park Heritage Trail

The South Park Heritage Trail is another exciting addition, featuring a two-mile-long cultural trail designed to showcase Southeast Raleigh’s history through art, interpretive signage, and streetscape enhancements. With a combined budget of $4.5 million, including grant funding, this trail aims to celebrate the culture, history, and legacy of the community while promoting connectivity and safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

Community involvement is a cornerstone of these projects. From the approval of the Community Advisory Group by the City Council to multiple public open houses and focus group meetings scheduled throughout 2024, residents have numerous opportunities to engage and provide input. These interactions are vital in ensuring that the projects not only meet the needs of the community but also enhance its character and cohesiveness.

The expansions at John Chavis Memorial Park are efforts aimed at preserving and promoting the area’s unique heritage while providing modern amenities that cater to the health, well-being, and enjoyment of all residents. As these projects progress, they promise to foster community pride and make Southeast Raleigh an even more vibrant place to live, work, and play.
